What is Latisse Eyelash Growth Serum?

Latisse eyelash growth serum is a topical treatment produced by Allergan, the makers of Botox. Its active ingredient is bimatoprost, a drug that’s been used to treat glaucoma for more than a decade. 

Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analog that encourages hair follicles to leave the resting phase and spend more time in the growth phase, leading to fuller, longer lashes. In 2008, Latisse received FDA approval as a treatment for hypotrichosis, or a lack of hair growth.

Users of Latisse can expect to see changes within 4 weeks, and significant improvements in eyelash thickness and length by 16 weeks. Consistent application of the serum will help ensure continued growth.

What to Expect During Your Latisse Treatment

Latisse should be applied once a day, before bed or as part of your evening skin care routine.

First, remove all makeup and mascara, clean your face thoroughly and take out contact lenses if you wear them. Hold the sterile applicator horizontally and apply one drop of Latisse to it, near the tip. 

Moving from the inner eyelid to the outer, apply the product in a thin line at the base of your upper eyelashes. There’s no need to apply to the lower eyelid, as the product will naturally spread there. 

Use a new applicator for each eyelid to prevent eye infection or injury.

While you shouldn’t expect to see full results overnight, consistent application will help improve the density and length of your eyelashes over a period of weeks to months.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects associated with Latisse are usually mild. The most common side effects include:

• Conjunctival hyperemia, a dilation and reddening of the conjunctival vessels
• Punctate keratitis, an inflammation of the eye
• Upper respiratory tract infection
• Eye pruritus, or itchy eyes

In most cases, the side effects occur within the first six months of treatment. Darkening around the area of application can occur as well.

What happens if I stop using Latisse?

Discontinuing use of Latisse will encourage your eyelashes to return to their baseline state. In other words, they’ll become less lush and full, and hypotrichosis may return. In short, the effects of Latisse are not permanent. Be sure to consult your physician if you intend to stop using Latisse.

Can contact lens wearers use Latisse?

Contact lens wearers can use Latisse, but you should not apply it while wearing your lenses. Take your lenses out and wait 15–20 minutes before applying the solution.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you miss an application, don’t take an extra dose. Just continue with your treatment as you normally would.

Can I use Latisse if I’m pregnant?

As with any drug, consult your physician before using Latisse while pregnant. There are currently no studies regarding the effects of Latisse on pregnant women or their babies.
