ZO 3-Step Peel at Skin Therapeutics

Three different solutions are applied to the facial skin as part of this novel procedure. The first is the chemical peel solution, which works to break down and slough away damaged, dull, inflamed or discolored surface skin, revealing the fresh, clear skin beneath.

For the second step, we will apply a cream that contains retinol and a blend of antioxidants. Retinol stimulates collagen production, restoring volume and firmness to wrinkled, loose, aging skin, while the antioxidants soothe inflammation and support cell regeneration. Applying the peel first allows this solution to penetrate deeper into the skin and work its magic from the inside out.

During the final step, we will apply a soothing cream solution, which further stimulates the production of collagen as well as hyaluronic acid – the hydrating compound that keeps skin lubricated and moist. This cream works to bolster the skin’s barrier function, ensuring protection against moisture loss, sun damage and airborne pollutants.

Immediately after treatment, your skin may appear slightly red. This will fade the next day, at which point your skin will look and feel slightly tighter than normal. It will begin peeling on the second day after treatment and continue for five days.

Peeling typically stops a full week after treatment. At this point, your new skin will feel smooth, firm and deeply refreshed, and will appear brighter, clearer and more even in tone and pigment. The texture and appearance of your skin will continue to improve for up to 3 additional weeks, as the formulas continue to bolster your collagen production and moisture retention.

Who is the Ideal Candidate for the ZO 3-Step Peel?

The ZO 3-Step Peel’s medium-strength formulation is safe for anyone aged 13–75, regardless of their skin type or color. It’s a smart choice for anyone looking to address common skin concerns such as dull skin tone, mild-to-moderate acne, sun damage, uneven pigment and fine lines.

Those with open sores or active skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding mothers are advised to avoid this treatment. Patients who take Accutane must stop treatment 12 months before undergoing a chemical peel procedure.

What to Expect from the Procedure

Once you are comfortably seated in our treatment room, our practitioner will apply the chemical peel solution to your face. Once the solution has absorbed into your skin, she will continue to the second step and apply the retinoid-rich antioxidant cream. Lastly, she will apply the soothing hydrating cream to help calm your skin and ease irritation.

The peel and enriching creams are left on the skin for at least 6 hours to ensure the ingredients have time to take effect. At the end of this period, you can wash your face and resume your regular skin care routine. You may also leave the solution on your skin overnight and wash it off in the morning for a deeper cleanse.

Peeling will begin on the second day after treatment, and typically lasts until day 7. All patients will be provided with an at-home aftercare kit containing two moisturizers, which can be applied as needed to reduce the severity of the peeling. 

Once you’re content with your skin’s appearance, a well-formulated skin care regimen and 2–3 additional ZO Peels per year will help you maintain your renewed look.

How long does the process take?

The full in-office procedure takes about 30 minutes in total and includes an initial cleanse, the three-step application and aftercare instructions.

Can you see results after one peel?

One peel is usually enough to effectively treat minor dermatological concerns and leave already healthy skin looking its best. However, if you’re experiencing deep wrinkles, severe acne or widespread hyperpigmentation, you will need multiple treatments to see dramatic changes. You can come in for additional treatments 3–4 weeks apart until you’re satisfied with your results.

What’s in the ZO chemical peel solution?

The peel solution used in the ZO 3-Step Peel is made of a blend of lactic, salicylic and trichloroacetic acid (TCA).

Does the procedure cause any pain?

Your skin will redden immediately after the treatment as if sunburnt, and may feel sensitive to the touch. However, most patients don’t report any pain or major discomfort at this stage or in subsequent days. By the second day, any redness and tenderness should clear up.
